Halloween has arrived, but long before modern celebrations, the Slavic people had their own nights filled with spirits, fire, and magic. These ancient traditions show a deep connection with nature and the rhythms of life. It’s a fascinating way to explore Russian culture while learning the language.
For example, Radunitsa holiday is a joyful and respectful commemoration of ancestors, whereas Halloween and similar Slavic nights often involve mischief, magic, and folklore.
Radunitsa, also known as Parental Monday, is one of the most important days for commemorating the deceased, tied to Easter. The holiday is observed at different times in various regions of Russia, usually on the Tuesday following the tenth day after Easter. According to folk beliefs, on this day the dead rise from their graves, break their fast after Lent, and rejoice that their descendants remember them. The holiday has deep roots in ancestor worship. The name Radunitsa comes from the word радость (joy), reflecting that the deceased celebrate both the Resurrection of Christ and the remembrance by their children. People attend memorial services, prepare meals at home, and honor their ancestors during this special time.

Святки, from January 6 to 19, were known as the “holy evenings.” It was a festive time of singing, games, and fortune-telling, when people dressed up, visited neighbors, and shared good wishes for the year ahead.
Велесова ночь, from October 31 to November 1, was believed to be a time when the boundary between worlds became thin. People welcomed the spirits of their ancestors with food and warmth and lit fires to keep away harmful forces.
День Лешего, celebrated on October 17, honored Leshy, the forest spirit who wandered through the woods before winter arrived, protecting animals and playing tricks on travelers.
These Slavic holidays show how language, history, and belief are strongly linked. Many phrases and folk expressions in Russian come from these traditions, making them a wonderful part of cultural learning. Learn Russian through culture and discover stories that have shaped generations!
