Not All “Teachers” Are the Same in Russian

Did you know that Russian uses different words for “teacher” depending on context.

In daycare, we use word воспитатель / воспитательница. It’s a caregiver who guides and raises young children. From воспитывать – to guide, raise someone.

At school, the common word is учитель / учительница (casual).

In universities, the more common term преподаватель is used for instructors and lecturers.

Student words also change:

● школьник / школьница school student

● студент / студентка university student

These pairs often go together: учитель → школьник, преподаватель → студент.

Using the right word helps your Russian sound natural and context-appropriate.
