Little Anna’s Little Eyes

The Russian name of the garden pansy or Viola tricolor is Анютины глазки – Little Anna’s Little Eyes.

In Russian Anyuta is a diminutive, ‘cute’ form of name Anna.

There is a legend about a beautiful and kind girl called Anyuta:

One day a young man came to the village and Anuyta fell in love with him.

But the young man turned out to be an irresponsible and unreliable man who promised Anyuta to return but when he left the village he forgot about her.

After long time of waiting for her love to come back Anyuta died of longing. On the place of her burial, delicate colourful flowers grew known as Little Anna’s Little Eyes. Three colours of petals are reflecting Anyutina’s feelings: white – hope, yellow – surprise, purple – sadness.
