Danish Hygge | Russian Uyut

Similarly to the Danish concept of hygge Russian word ‘уют’ ‘uyut’ cannot be translated into a single word.

This Danish idea of feeling cozy and well-being through enjoying the simple things in life became a hot trend in North American lifestyle magazines and blogs in 2016.

What does cozy mean to you besides hot chocolate, candles, oversized sweaters, and thick socks? For me, it also means family, connection, and loved ones.

No wonder this word has an additional meaning for me: the Russian word ‘уют’ ‘uyut’ derived from a Latvian “jùmts’ ‘roof’, ‘refuge’, ‘cover’, ‘shelter’, ‘asylum.’
